Trying to Dry Your Wet Carpet Before Mold Sets In? Follow These Helpful Tips!

There’s no cringier feeling than stepping on a wet carpet. Just hearing a ‘splat’ is enough to bring the shivers! But there is one more reason to severely dislike wet carpets. Sitting water in your carpet creates the ideal breeding ground for mold—a fact that many homeowners don’t pay attention to.

The smallest amount of mold in the carpet can prove disastrous to the people living in that home! This is why quick action is essential when your floor furnishing gets water-damaged!

When Does Mold Grow in Carpet After Water Damage?

It takes mold under 24 to 48 hours to grow on a wet carpet, if the conditions are ideal. Carpets attract mold really quickly, especially old floor furnishings that are dirty and haven’t been professionally cleaned in a long time.

Besides worrying about the unsightly presence of mold on their wet carpet, homeowners must also find a way to deal with the unpleasant odor that it gives rise to. Additionally, you may not know about this growing parasite immediately because mold is only visible at a microscopic level during the first few days.

It takes at least a week or two for it to grow to the extent that it becomes visible to the naked eye.

Open Windows and Turn on Fans

Fans and open windows aren’t enough to dry a wet carpet on their own power. Yet doing this will ensure that fresh air is circulated inside the carpeted room. Also, keep the fans running throughout the day!

Another great way to dry a wet carpet fast and prevent (or limit) mold growth is by using a dehumidifier in the room.

Sanitize All Walls and Baseboards

It doesn’t matter if the water wasn’t contaminated. Standing water increases the chance of mold and mildew growth, not just for the carpet, but any furniture touched by water. Walls and baseboards come to mind first—both of which should be cleaned thoroughly with a soap and water mixture.

You can also add 1.5 cups of bleach in a gallon of water for a strong acting and sanitizing solution!

Some Additional Tips

  • Has your carpet remained damp for longer than 48 hours? Don’t take a risk and consult mold removal specialists at once.
  • Remove all furniture from the room with the water damaged carpet, to ensure professional carpet cleanershave room to work.

Mold, mildew and accompanying odors can ruin a beautiful home or room setup. Make sure this doesn’t happen to your home!
